After the meeting concluded, Pierce watched as the Mossad team prepped their gear and weapons. He did the same, ensuring an optimal weight balance between too much weaponry and too little agility, knowing that it was ideal to remain in the field for the shortest amount of time possible, but also knowing they could get stuck in Yemen for days or weeks if the situation turned bad, so it was always best to plan for the worst.

When Cohen felt satisfied everyone was combat ready, he radioed Gabi to return to the tanker, and twenty minutes later their forward operating team member arrived, piloting a hired motorboat. Gabi offered that the motorboat was less suspicious than their modern Zodiac Milpro dinghies while they transited Aden’s harbour during daylight. Cohen accepted this, then instructed that the team set off. They powered west along the southern shore of the harbour until they reached the tourist quay.

Cohen gave his orders as they approached a mooring dock. “Berenson, Pierce, you walk Vautrin to the park and keep a close eye on her.”

Pierce nodded. “That means minimal kit. So as not to look suspicious?”

“Yes, I’m afraid so. The rest of the team will provide backup and remain close behind you in cars. We’ll bring the heavy firepower should you need it.”

“Don’t be a baby, Pierce.” Berenson nodded to both men, then, ducking low into the boat so as to be out of sight from the land, she reapplied her fake beard so that she resembled a young man, and slipped into a lightweight Kevlar vest, which she hid under her loose T-shirt. “You’re a big boy. You know how to handle yourself.”

Pierce smirked. “Guess I can’t have you showing me up out there.” He lost his plate carrier, dressed in a similar bullet-protective vest under a shirt and jeans, and equipped himself only with his Jericho pistol tucked into the small of his back at his spine, and a single switchblade knife he slipped into his jeans’ pockets. He felt exposed but understood Cohen’s decision. Somebody needed to remain close to Vautrin and not stand out, but Pierce didn’t mind because of his immense distrust of the Frenchwoman. He wanted, no needed, to keep himself close to the former arms dealer at all times.

Once moored to the quay, Pierce, Berenson and Vautrin stepped off the motorboat, then walked together along the main street, past coffee shops, candy stores and electronics vendors. The day had grown dustier and hotter, bringing sweat to their skins. The city didn’t seem that crowded compared to how he remembered it, with everyone staying out of the heat. This gave Pierce comfort, knowing he’d immediately spot a tail or a kill team should one be advancing upon them even now. And although he couldn’t see Cohen and the others, he knew they were nearby, out of sight as they should be. Mossad had a fierce reputation of efficiency, and he should trust that.

“I don’t like this,” Berenson whispered.

“Neither do I,” said Vautrin, answering even when the remark had been directed at Pierce.
